U-LINK (University of Miami - Laboratory for INtegrative Knowledge) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Research

Important Dates

• Finalists will be invited for interviews to take place in December 2018

Earliest Start Date

• January 1, 2019

Background and Objectives: The world’s most compelling and difficult problems are complex. Fully addressing the challenges of climate change, for example, requires understanding weather patterns, the relationship of health and disease to environment/diet, coastal architecture, energy policy, city planning, human behavior, truth in media, social justice, international relations, big data, and many other fields. A key goal of the University of Miami (UM) is to serve as a center of inquiry in which scholars from multiple disciplines can work together to pursue innovation, in areas where the world needs them most. UM’s diversity, found in our 11 schools and colleges, provides unique advantages for junior scholars to explore and successfully address such problems.

The University of Miami Laboratory for INtegrative Knowledge (U-LINK) seeks applications from postdoctoral scholars who desire to pursue such problem-based interdisciplinary research. The U-LINK Postdoctoral Fellowship requires the scholar to seek mentorship from at least two UM faculty representing a minimum of two distinct disciplines. We especially encourage proposals that tackle problems aligning with UM’s Roadmap To Our New Century initiative (http://roadmap.miami.edu); e.g., addressing environmental challenges, engineering smart/connected cities, promoting health and wellness, cultivating a culture of belonging, and applying the potential of big data to global issues. The U-LINK Postdoctoral Fellowship, comprising a stipend of $60K/year, a generous benefit package, and a spending allowance of $10K/yr, is an attractive opportunity for mature, innovative junior researchers with the ability and desire to operate in an interdisciplinary environment.

Eligibility: The U-LINK Postdoctoral Fellowship is intended for exceptional junior scholars who have recently earned their doctoral degree. Awardees must have completed their degree requirements to begin their fellowship, and may not have had more than 2 years of total postdoctoral experience, nor been employed as an assistant professor, associate professor, professor, or equivalent rank, at the time of fellowship initiation.

Application Process: Candidates must engage with their proposed UM mentors to develop an interdisciplinary project, complete an online application no later than October 10, 2018 by 5PM EST, and have three letters of recommendation sent directly to klamper@miami.edu. Each letter should include the title, affiliation, and contact information for each recommender. Finalists will be invited for interviews to take place in December 2018.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Track record of the applicant

• Likelihood of conducting original, interdisciplinary work with societal relevance

• Appropriateness of mentors and/or team members at UM to address the problem

• Potential to advance the career of the applicant

• Strength of the mentoring team

Successful applicants will demonstrate the capacity to address a significant societal problem with interdisciplinary and synergistic approaches. The team (applicant + UM mentors) will comprise accomplished or promising researchers and scholars from any academic disciplines. Teams will need to demonstrate the use of innovative approaches, processes and/or technologies.
