Research Scientist - Genetic Engineering for the Cell Atlas Initiative of the Vertebrate Development - CZ Biohub, San Francisco

Description

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub ("CZ Biohub”) is an independent nonprofit medical research organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub supports scientific research to cure, prevent or manage disease in our children’s lifetime. Our mission is to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and to develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We harness the power and possibility of collaboration to drive discovery and set the standard for open, impactful science. For more information, please visit czbiohub.org.

As part of our Cell Atlas Initiative, the CZ Biohub has started a collaborative effort towards building a multimodal Cellular Atlas of the Vertebrate Development using zebrafish as model organism.

Opportunity

We are currently seeking an outstanding Research Scientist to join our collaborative and interdisciplinary project at the interface between imaging and sequencing. The individual will be embedded in the team led by Loic A Royer, and will be in charge of developing innovative sequencing pipeline and genetic tools for the project. The candidate will work on cutting edge technology development combining genetic engineering, single-cell sequencing, CRISPR-Cas9, zebrafish transgenesis, and state-of-the-art imaging using a wide array of modern technologies. This an exciting chance to be embedded in a highly collaborative and well-funded project, with great opportunities for learning and skill development. We are looking for a team player with strong technical skills in addition to excellent communication skills. The ideal candidate will be capable of experimental design, execution, troubleshooting and data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Single cell dissociation and sorting from fresh fish embryos
  • NGS library preparation, sequencing, and sequence analysis
  • Development of genetic construct for imaging and sequencing
  • Transgenesis using CRISPR in zebrafish

Requirements

  • PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology or a related discipline, or Bachelor’s/Master’s degree for exceptional candidates with proven relevant experience and strong publication track record
  • Molecular biology (cloning, RNA extraction, PCR techniques, among others)
  • Experience with cell sorting
  • NGS library prep, sequencing, analysis
  • Must be highly collaborative, team-oriented and have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Desired Experience

  • CRISPR-based genome editing, preferably in Zebrafish.
  • Programming experience in Python (preferably) or R
  • Experience with fluorescence imaging

IMPORTANT NOTE: Applications without a cover letter have a low chance of success.
