Within the University, the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) is a highly interdisciplinary researchcentre (IC), integrating experimental biology and computational biology approaches in order to develop the foundation of a future predictive, preventive and personalized medicine.
Area: the applicant will be a member of the Enzymology & Metabolism Research Group headed by Assist. Prof. Dr. Carole Linster at the LCSB. The Group’s research currently focuses on elucidating the physiological functions of more recently identified metabolic enzymes and on developing strategies for accelerating enzyme function discovery. A second central topic is the generation of disease models for selected inborn errors of metabolism to study underlying disease mechanisms and/or investigate treatment options. The group develops advanced phenotyping techniques, including metabolomics, to address related research questions and uses the budding yeast, zebrafish, and mammalian cell culture, including iPSC-derived cells, as main model systems.
We seek a highly skilled and motivated researcher to develop an EU-funded project within an international consortium that focuses on two rare disorders of lysine metabolism causing debilitating and progressive neurological symptoms in young children. In brief, the Luxembourg contribution to the project includes the generation and deep characterization of several in vivo disease models using zebrafish to ultimately evaluate a number of innovative strategies to improve early diagnosis and early implementation of personalized therapies to enhance long-term health outcomes and patients’ quality of life.
More specifically your tasks will include:
Generation of stable mutant lines (via CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing) in zebrafish
Performance of experiments using zebrafish embryos/larvae, e.g. microinjections, behavioral tests, open field recordings, immunohistochemistry
Performance of molecular biology experiments, such as PCR-based genotyping, cloning
Performance of metabolomics experiments, such as extractions, LC-MS metabolite analysis
Modern data management and precise project documentation
Active meeting participation and reporting within the international consortium
Capacity to work in a collaborative environment among different service-based platforms, e.g. aquatic, metabolomics, microscopy
Ordering consumables and maintaining stocks
Maintenance of a clean laboratory setting
Active participation in group meetings
A Master’s degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, neurosciences, biotechnology or another similar life science related discipline
Previous work in the field of metabolic biochemistry and/or neurosciences will be considered as an advantage
Experience with molecular biology techniques is essential
Experience with working with animals is essential (animal laboratory science certificate Function A or B according to the European Directive 2010/63/EU is required). Previous experience with aquaculture techniques and/or with zebrafish will be considered as an advantage
Excellent organizational and management skills

Strong computational skills
Fluency in oral and written English is essential
