Zebrafish Animal Caretaker – EPFL – Lausanne, Switzerland

Your mission:

The Center of PhenoGenomics (CPG) is specialised in animal experimentation. It contributes to the research excellence by supporting the scientific community through tailored services and by ensuring the highest animal welfare standards in compliance with laws and ethics. To strengthen its team the CPG is looking for a highly motivated and organized aquatic animal caretaker to support the growth of its fish unit.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Responsibilities include:

  • Daily observation of fish colonies (monitoring animal welfare and health status);

  • Assisting semi-automated and manual feedings of animals (i.e., programming of feeding robots, dry food preparation and culturing of live feeds);

  • Maintenance of the central life support unit and all its components, including the quarantine and project rooms (e.g., probes calibration);

  • Performing water quality tests to follow environmental parameters (i.e., pH and conductivity measurements, determination of heavy metals and ammonia concentration);

  • Participating to zebrafish husbandry and colony management of stock and mutant lines;

  • Training and assisting users with technical procedures (e.g., zebrafish sperm cryopreservation and in vitro fertilization, animal breeding, embryo collection);

  • Routinely wash of soiled surfaces and consumables;

  • Occasional weekends and holidays duties (once every two months).

Your profile:

  • Animal caretaker or related federal certificate of proficiency;

  • Experience in working with aquatic species, and especially zebrafish, is preferred but not mandatory;

  • Good ability to organise and prioritise tasks;

  • Team worker with good communication skill;

  • Fluency in English is essential, French is a plus.
