Research Assistant, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Assistant to join the Biology Department. This is a regular, full-time position, non-exempt position and is eligible for full benefits.

With some supervision, the Research Assistant will participate in experimental work with zebrafish and medaka embryos involving molecular biology and genomic editing technologies in the course of research into the toxic effects of chemicals on fish embryos. Additional duties will include assisting in the care and breeding of zebrafish and medaka. Excellent communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently, effectively, and productively are required. The successful candidate will have practical experience in molecular biology. This is a Woods Hole, land based position.

The internal working title of this position will be Research Assistant II.

Essential Functions

Perform the necessary tasks to accomplish the goals of the toxicology research, including:

  • Maintenance and breeding of various mutant and transgenic fish lines.

  • Generation of mutant and transgenic lines with assistance, including microinjection.

  • Genotyping of mutant lines

  • Exposure of fish to toxic chemicals

  • Microscopic examination and documentation of fish embryos

  • Detailed record keeping

  • DNA and RNA extraction and qPCR analysis

  • Chemical extraction

  • NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • As deemed necessary by supervisor

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Associate’s Degree in related field plus one year related experience or High School Diploma or equivalent plus three year’s related experience.

  • Experience in molecular assays (DNA isolation; polymerase chain reaction (PCR)). Experience in fish culture a plus.

Physical Requirements

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift 25-50 pounds; carry 10-25 lbs. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively. Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, reaching above and below the shoulders, climbing ladders/stools, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, twisting, and stooping. Other occupational requirements include talking, working around others, with others and working alone. Will be exposed to dust or other irritants, hazardous substances or specimens and odorous chemicals or specimens. Physical duties are subject to change.
