Research Associate – Zebrafish Genetic Manipulation, Jacobo/Balla/Royer Groups, Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, San Francisco, CA

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco ( CZ Biohub SF) (https://www.czbiohub.org/sf/) is an independent nonprofit research institute that brings together three powerhouse universities - Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco - into a single collaborative technology and discovery engine. CZ Biohub SF itself supports some of the brightest, boldest engineers, data scientists, and biomedical researchers to investigate the fundamental mechanisms underlying disease and develop new technologies that will lead to actionable diagnostics and effective therapies. We are guided by our values of scholarly excellence; disruptive innovation; hands-on engineering/hacking/building; partnership and collaboration; open communication and respect; inclusiveness; and opportunity for all.

Our Vision

  • We pursue large scientific challenges that cannot be pursued in conventional environments

  • We enable individual investigators to pursue their riskiest and most innovative ideas

  • The technologies developed at CZ Biohub San Francisco facilitate research by scientists and clinicians at our home institutions and beyond

Diversity of thought, ideas, and perspectives are at the heart of CZ Biohub Network and enable disruptive innovation and scholarly excellence. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive organization where all colleagues feel inspired and know their work makes an important contribution.

The Opportunity

The Jacobo, Balla, and Royer groups are building an interdisciplinary team of researchers with experience in biology, physics, computer science, and microscopy, to study groundbreaking scientific questions using zebrafish as a model system. As part of this effort, we are looking for an energetic, curious, and team-oriented Research Associate to join our Zebrafish Genetic Manipulation Unit. The candidate will expand the unit’s efforts to develop a versatile toolbox of genetically modified zebrafish. The tools we develop will enable our team to study immune responses and cell state dynamics at the organ and whole-organism level.

What You'll Do

  • Under the mentorship and supervision of senior researchers, plan and execute hands-on laboratory procedures to generate transgenic zebrafish, develop more efficient approaches for genetic modification, and deploy new molecular tools in diverse experimental contexts

  • Rapidly learn and apply molecular biology lab techniques and zebrafish husbandry in an active research environment with access to state-of-the-art resources

  • Troubleshoot protocols, maintain detailed records, analyze results, and contribute ideas to research projects

What You'll Bring

Essential –

  • Bachelor's degree in a life science

  • 1 year molecular biology lab experience (such as one or more of the following: cloning, PCR, in vitro transcription, handling of DNA and RNA)

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Must be a dedicated team player who can also work independently

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Nice to have -

  • Master’s degree in a life science

  • 3 years experience in molecular lab techniques

  • Experience working with zebrafish

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Networkrequires all employees, contractors, and interns, regardless of work location or type of role, to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, including a booster vaccine dose, if eligible, by their start date. Those who are unable to get vaccinated or obtain a booster dose because of a disability, or who choose not to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance must have an approved exception prior to their start date.

Compensation

  • Research Associate I = $52,000 - $77,000

  • Research Associate II = $67,000 - $99,000

New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. To determine starting pay, we consider multiple job-related factors including a candidate’s skills, education and experience, market demand, business needs, and internal parity. We may also adjust this range in the future based on market data. Your recruiter can share more about the specific pay range during the hiring process.
