Research Assistant, Lyons Lab, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Summary
We are looking for a motivated research assistant to join the group of Prof. David Lyons at the University of Edinburgh to investigate mechanisms of myelinated axon formation, health, and function. The post will support a postdoc-driven project that aims to discover how the nervous system develops to support the conduction of electrical impulses in the brain, using zebrafish as a model system and employing cutting edge microscopy and genetic technology.
Main Responsibilities
Use an array of molecular genetic approaches to develop new genetic tools to be used in zebrafish nervous systems with the goal to understand the organization and role of myelinated axon anatomy in developing neural circuits.
Generating transgenic animals (zebrafish) and sorting for desired expression patterns in the nervous system of young living zebrafish larva that are several days old, and using light microscopy such as confocal microscopy to image fluorescent reporters.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records to document project progress. Present data at group meetings and discuss relevant papers at journal club.
Management of zebrafish stocks, including record keeping for Home Office related animal procedures.
Skills and attributes for success:
Degree in neuroscience, developmental biology, or similar
Ability to communicate complex information clearly, orally and in writing
Laboratory experience essential and expertise in molecular and cellular approaches desirable
Experience of using zebrafish as a model is desirable
