The Zebrafish International Resource Center (ZIRC, http://zebrafish.org) at the University of Oregon, is seeking a full-time Software Developer with System Administrator skills to support our mission in biomedical research. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your skills in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment that supports scientists worldwide.

 

Responsibilities & Duties

Main activities will include the development of web-based applications for a Customer Data Submission System (fish line acquisition data), maintenance of existing order tracking, shipments, pathology case service, and in-house research. You will work closely with a team of biologists, data curators, and support staff to design practical solutions that improve research reproducibility and operational efficiency.

 

Additional responsibilities may include 1) the administration of ZIRC’s web, database, and file servers, 2) general troubleshooting, cybersecurity, and assisting staff with client computers and applications, and 3) support for migrating the ZIRC databases into the university cloud environment.

 

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Bioinformatics, Management Information Systems, or related fields, as well as 1 - 2 years of experience in web development or IT system administration.

 

Preferred Skills

  • Structured software/system development:

o        Internet/intranet administration applications

o        e-commerce site management

·      Experience with PHP, Java, HTML/JavaScript/CSS, SQL

·      Experience using modern web frameworks

·      SSH, version control (git)

·      Experience administering and/or using SQL relational database server

·      Experience with  linux/unix system administration

·      Experience designing and consuming APIs

·      Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills

·      Strong documentation skills

·      Apache in a Unix environment

·      Familiarity with developing and using re-usable code

·      Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications Word and Excel

·      Maintain internal wiki with technical documentation, manuals and IT policies

·      Install and configure software and hardware

·      Experience with 3-D design (CAD) and printing

 

Bonus Qualifications (Not Required)

·       Familiarity with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems

·       Network configuration and troubleshooting (TCP/IP)

·       Familiarity with Perl

·       Experience with system monitoring tools (e.g., Icinga)

·       Background or interest in Biology, biomedical research, Genetics or related field

·       Device management (e.g., 3D-Printer, iPads, Symbol handhelds)

·       Cybersecurity tools and best practices, including firewalls and certificate management (SSL)

 

Appointment Details

We offer a 4-year, National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded commitment, with the possibility of further extension. The annual salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
